“To put it nicely, no matter how hard you train, no matter how many years you put in, stuff happens at the Olympics,” writes Jim Caple of ESPN.com. It is a reminder to all of us that in the world of running, anything can happen.

It is a runner’s dream to compete at the Olympics. USA runner Morgan Uceny was running in the Olympics and in the  final of her event, the 1500 meters. A dream come true. She had one lap to go and had been called a medal contender. And then somehow, the unthinkable happened. She fell and fell hard.

It is hard to see these images without feeling heartbreak for her. You know she worked hard. This was her moment. I can’t even imagine how she must have felt.

To add insult to injury, this wasn’t her first fall in a major competition. Last year, in the world championships, she fell with 500 meters to go and saw her medal chances run away from her.  In that race, she finished 10th.  On Friday night, on the world’s biggest stage, she ended up with a DNF (did not finish).

Our hearts go out to Morgan Uceny.  She is still a champion in my book.
